San Antonio, Texas. – The North American Development Bank (NADB) signed a grant agreement for up to US$450,000 with Comisión Estatal de Servicios Públicos de Tecate (CESPTE) for a project to extend water and wastewater services to unserved areas of the Piedra Angular subdivision.
The grant funds are being provided through NADB’s Community Assistance Program (CAP) and will cover up to 90% of the costs of the project, which entails providing sewer service to the entire subdivision benefitting approximately 644 residents, as well as extending the existing water distribution system.
The main components of the project include construction of a sanitary sewer system, including 174 residential hookups and the decommissioning of 48 septic tanks and latrines. The project is expected to collect an estimated 34,000 gallons a day for adequate treatment and disposal.
In addition, 1,339 feet of water distribution lines will be installed to extend access to drinking water service to 51 households that are not connected to the current system.
The project was certified by the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) on December 3, 2014, and upon completion is expected to reduce the risk of contamination of existing groundwater resources from substandard on-site disposal systems, as well as the potential for contamination of shared water bodies, including the Tecate and Tijuana Rivers.
