Solid waste management seminar begins in Coahuila

Piedras Negras, Coahuila. – More than 30 representatives from both the public and private sector in the state of Coahuila are attending a seminar on solid waste management offered through the Utility Management Institute (UMI) of the North American Development Bank (NADB) in coordination with Latin American and Caribbean water center, Centro del Agua para América Latina y el Caribe (CDA), of the Monterrey Technological Institute (ITESM).

The seminar focuses on the comprehensive management of solid waste in compliance with Mexican regulations and is intended to help participants understand the basic legal requirements for providing safe and efficient waste collection and disposal services in their communities. The three-day seminar consists of eight sessions for a total of 24 hours of training provided by CDA instructors. Topics covered include waste reduction and recycling, designing collection routes, and a workshop for developing environmentally-friendly solid waste projects.

Among the attendees were representatives from 11 cities in Coahuila—Sabinas, Guerrero, Jiménez, Monclova, Villa Unión, Acuña, Nadadores, Cuatro Ciénegas, General Cepeda, Parras and Saltillo—as well as from the Coahuila State Ministry of the Environment, the Border Environment Cooperation Commission (BECC) and a few private waste management companies.

For the past four years, NADB and ITESM, through the CDA, have been working together to offer training to utility and city personnel along the northern border of Mexico. Upon completion of the course, the participants will receive certificates from the CDA.

NADB is planning to host three additional seminars this year: one on business management for Mexican water utilities and two on climate change. In April, UMI will initiate its basic utility management program in San Antonio, Texas.
